Web 2.0 in your Library

Published by Martin De Saulles on Tagged Innovation

Thanks to those who attended my presentation last night for the Sussex sub-branch of CILIP South East on Web 2.0 in libraries. Approximately 30 people turned up for the talk at University Centre Hastings. It was interesting to hear from the audience of librarians and library students about some of their experiences with new services such as Facebook. It is clearly early days with the adoption of new technologies and services by libraries but there seems to be quite a lot of enthusiasm for learning more about their potential and limitations. Based on our experiences in Brighton, Facebook is where our students are spending their time and where it might be appropriate to integrate some of our online library and information services. Research by a colleague last month of our first year undergraduate media students indicates that 96% of them have a Facebook profile while 1% regularly use Second Life - I suspect you would find similar results from most Universities in the UK and US. You can draw your own conclusions from those figures.

My slides from last night are HERE (PDF 1.3MB). My talk was also recorded so when the MP3 file is available I will put a link to it.
